Niagara Launcher is falsely identified as Malicious Software

Every now and then, a few virus scanners (our highest score was 3/63 according to VirusTotal) falsely claim a version of Niagara Launcher is "malicious."

We can only guess why this happens:

Possibility 1: Someone could have modified the APK file and uploaded it on a shady site. Please only download unmodified Niagara Launcher versions, either directly from Google Play or our communities (Discord, Telegram, GitHub, see: https://help.niagaralauncher.app/article/107-beta-tester). APKMirror is fine, too. (APKMirror checks Niagara Launcher's signatures to ensure the app has not been tampered with and is trusted by many.)

Possibility 2: We're obfuscating our source code by replacing internal variable and method names with random strings. Code obfuscation is a common practice to prevent others from stealing our work and to fight piracy. We go one step further and generate new random strings for every version of Niagara Launcher so that every build looks different from an attacker's perspective. Often, Antivirus software does not judge other apps by what they're doing but how they're structured. Our random code obfuscation methods could falsely alarm antivirus software.

Either way, we could always "fix" this issue by recompiling our app (without any code changes).

Note that Niagara Launcher does not contain any malicious code, and Google Play Protect, antivirus software that comes with most devices, never had any issues with Niagara Launcher. Moreover, we have an honest business model. We're selling Niagara Pro, not your data and not malware.
