Android Version Support Changes for Niagara Launcher
This article explains why Niagara Launcher is ending support for older Android versions and what this means for you.
Why We're Ending Support for Older Android Versions
Niagara Launcher runs on millions of devices, and keeping it reliable means we have to make tradeoffs about which Android versions we actively maintain. Older Android versions, released as far back as 2015, no longer receive security updates from Google and lack features that Niagara Launcher increasingly depends on to work well.
To keep Niagara Launcher fast, secure, and full of new features, we're raising the minimum supported Android version to Android 8, which affects around 1.38% of our users. This allows us to spend more time improving Niagara Launcher for the vast majority of users.
What's Changing and When
Here's a summary of what's happening and when:
-
April 16, 2026 (starting with v1.16.0)
Purchasing Niagara Pro is no longer available on Android 5, 6, or 7. If you already own Niagara Pro, you can still use it on these versions for now.
-
July 1st, 2026
Niagara Launcher will stop receiving updates on Android 5, 6, and 7. You can keep using the version you have, but it won't be updated.
-
January 1st, 2027
Niagara Pro and other features that require an internet connection will stop working on Android 5, 6, and 7.
Android 8 and above are fully supported and will continue to receive all updates.
What You Can Do
If you're on Android 5, 6, or 7, you have a few options:
-
1. Check for a system update
Some manufacturers released Android 8 updates for devices that originally shipped with older versions. Go to your phone's settings and check for system updates. For more details, check out Google's official article: Check & update your Android version.
-
2. Consider upgrading your device
If your phone can't update beyond Android 7, it may be time to consider a newer device. Any Android 8 or later device will support Niagara Launcher fully.
-
3. Keep using Niagara Launcher without Pro
If upgrading isn't an option right now, you can continue using the free version of Niagara Launcher on your current device.
